In light of the staggering number of stories of sexual harassment and assault in the news, one fact is clear: it doesn’t matter if you are at home, at work, or on vacation – women have been victims of assault and harassment in surprisingly high numbers. Research indicates that one in five women will be raped at some point in their lives, and another 20% of women will be assaulted while in college. When it comes to harassment, the statistics are even more shocking: 54% of women have experienced “unwanted and inappropriate sexual advances” in their lives.
In many instances, the women who have stepped forward to share their stories actually worked with – or worked for – their alleged perpetrators. And while it is true that some of the stories surfacing in the news occurred many years ago, there are many others that happened recently. Regardless of the time frame, the fact is that this issue was simply absent from the national conversation until recently, although the reality was very real and painful for all of the affected victims, their friends, and their family.
